Lands of America data records $87 million in farms, ranches and other land for sale in the Green Mountain State. This represents some 19,677 acres of land for sale in the state. The most expensive property listed for sale on Lands of America recently was $3 million, although the median price for land, ranches and farms in Vermont came in at $270,668. The average price of land, ranches and rural property in Vermont was $333,942. Lands of America research shows that over half the land in the Green Mountain State is privately owned. Hunting and trapping in Vermont is available on over 800,000 acres of public hunting lands, where popular game species include white-tailed deer, black bear, moose, wild turkey, ruffed grouse, woodcock and waterfowl. Vermonters also enjoy access to 808 lakes and ponds and over 7,000 miles of rivers and streams, home to over 90 species of fish. Vermont is one of the country's smallest states in terms of size, covering an area of 9,615 square miles (6 million acres). In its entirety, 9,217 square miles (96 percent) of the state is land, while the remaining 400 square miles comprises water. Less than ten percent of land in Vermont is public land (i.e. national and state parks, national forests, BLM land). With numerous opportunities to hunt species including deer, boar and wild turkey, hunting land was the most common type of land for sale in Vermont. Of the 14 counties in Vermont, Orleans County had the most land and farms for sale, while Windham County was trending recently as the county with the most land sales recorded through the Lands of America Comparable Sales program.
